![]() ![]() Love the bars, and the fairing keeps them whisper quiet. With the removable fairing you can adjust how far in or out the fairing sits, but still the Yakima clamps are too long. I have a set of four crossbars and the removable fairing. $3 solution for fit and wind noise with Yakima Skybox 16 on LFD crossbars.Īs mentioned, the clamps on the Skybox won't work with the LFD fairing. The LFD roof rack is nice, but again, is kinda narrow.Īppreciate any ideas here. It seems tbe Yakima is a better fit for roof racks, although it is wider and leaves less space for other uses. However, I have not found a roof rack that works with the Thule Force box, because of its front lip. I could probably fit a plano box/kayak mount/gas can next to the thule box, but not the yakima.įinally, i have considered getting a 3/4 roof rack. The yakima box takes up almost all of the span of the LFD bars, which are quite short in comparison to other rood racks, at 40 inches. The problem is, can you really use the full 165 lb capacity of rhe thule box? 165 plus 40 lbs for the box weight, plus another 15 lbs for the LFD bars technically exceeds the capacity of the stock roof rails.Īnother reason I prefer the thule box is that it is thinner. I somewhat prefer the thule force boxes because they have metal rails, which give them a 40 lbs capacity increase over the yakima, which is all plastic. Any idea if the L model would work, it is a bit shorter. I was hoping the Thule Force XT L would work, with the slimmer clamp design, however from your post it seems the XL model has the same problem as the yakima. The wrap around clamps of the Yakima will not fit between th3 first crossbar with the wind fairing and the second crossbar, given that they need to be pushed all the way to the front to allow the hatch to fully open. Currently have two LFD crossbars and the new LFD crossbar with integrated wind fairing. I am having a similar issue with the Yakima 16 skybox. I also don't like how far past the front bar the XT XL sits with no support, so I'm downsizing the box. I like the convenience of the Thule mounting system, and I want to keep the wind fairing on the front (without modification). If I was OK with hatch contact, I could use the Thule mounting system on a 2nd and 3rd crossbar. The Thule feet will not wrap around the LFD wind fairing. To mount the Force XT XL with no hatch contact, it needs to be pushed almost entirely forward and carriage bolts (or something else) used to mount on the front bar. I'm using the LFD bar with the integrated wind fairing on the front. I have the Thule Force XT XL on LFD bars (and factory rails) (5th Gen T4R). Just waiting on the Gobi Stealth basket to come in. This is almost the exact setup I have in mind for my roof rack. Happy to take any questions about the setup, fitment, clearance, etc. Yakima mounting feet are adjustable fore and aft, while the Thule mounting feet are in set locations (I'm 99% sure this comment is accurate regarding the Thule Force) in the hypothetical instance of failure i much prefer the Yakima system, which even if it were to somehow fail, would be more difficult to actually come fully off the crossbars. the Thule feet pinch the front and back of the crossbar. Yakima mounting feet wrap under the crossbar from front to back. this seemed to be due to the more angular shape on the Thule front end. however, the front of the Thule lid continuously was getting caught on the front corner of the base. Thule aesthetically is very cool looking, no doubt. Thule has 6 sturdy metal hooks for interior tie-downs while the Yakima has 4 plastic hooks for tie-downs. i like the action on the Yakima much more than Thule when closing, the Yakima is makes a distinct *click* when properly closed. there is no lever system to release the lid. the Thule had a plastic knob that rotates as you unlock. must unlock then rotate lever to release the lid. SkyBox interior floor is a flatter design that Thule, which had more undulations across the bottom Spent a while at REI going back and forth between Yakima SkyBox 18 and Thule Force XT XXL as they are comparable in price and size, here's what i personally noted as pro/cons looking up thru the sunroof, i could see the cushioned support under the bow of the box made for very little wobbling doing 80 down the hwy and had no extra noise (although with the other bolt-ons my 4R is already fairly noisy). test drive from Austin to Houston yesterday with some gear loaded in. the mounting feet themselves sit approx 1/4" to 1/2" above the mesh floor of the rack. cross bars can be positioned so that the rear a the box clears the open lift-gate while also resting the nose on a sup pad across the front raised bar. ![]() Yakima SkyBox 18 + Gobi Rack with removable crossbars makes for a very good fit atop the 5th gen. ![]()
